Around and about - Angling

The Wentworth recommends a number of fishing venues close to the Hotel. There are lots of lakes and an increasing number of purpose built ponds. The sea is 5 minutes away in the car and we have five ponds also within 5 minutes of the Hotel.

We can arrange transport if required and can supply your bait requirements given prior notice. Most of the day ticket waters charge £5.00 and offer concessions. Many also provide opportunities for night fishing, in which case you will not need to stay at the Hotel!

We can provide a programme of venues to suit your requirements, or, at the very least, directions on how to find the more obscure spots.

Lakes & Ponds

Aldbrough

Within 3 minutes of the Hotel are 5 ponds/lakes stocked with Carp, Tench, Bream, Roach.

Not far from the Hotel, but a combination of hiking & fishing are 2 ponds and an area of swamp land set in a new woodland plantation. A very pleasant walk of about 30 minutes (with light tackle) gets you to the first pond. The ponds are stocked with Koi carp, Rudd, and Perch. The fishing is free, but a donation to the RSPB would be welcomed.

Hornsea

Within 10 minutes of the Hotel is Yorkshire largest Lake, Hornsea Mere. Boat and bank fishing for Roach, Perch, Bream. The record Perch came from here many years ago. A massive lake that is predominantly a nature reserve and a favourite haunt for birdwatchers.

Brandsburton

A series of Lakes 15 minutes from the Hotel offer a range of course fish.

Burstwick

Two delightful lakes offers fairly exclusive fishing about 20 minutes from the Hotel:

Rainbow lake was until recently a syndicate water and has been had a comprehensive facelift by its new owner and now offers excellent facilities. It is primarily a carp water although other species in small numbers can be found.

Although pellets of various forms are the favourite with many carp anglers, the fish also take a floating crust at dusk, which is much more exciting!

Newbridge lake nearby has been a day ticket water for some years and offers a range of species, notably, Bream, Carp, Roach, Tench and Perch. It is slightly larger than Rainbow and has two further ponds that have recently been constructed. These later ponds are more accessible for the disabled angler.

Wansford

A day ticket water typical of the many man-made ponds in the area.

Rivers

The River Hull

At Frodingham to the north of Hull it has many of the qualities of a chalk stream and is generally private fishing (many good private ponds in this area as well).

At Hull bridge near Beverley (about 20 mins from the Hotel) The Hull holds bream, roach and pike From here north to Hempholme (where the best fishing may be had north towards the weir) various spots can be fished. You will need an ordinance survey map of the area and fish light to get to the best spots.

Canals

The closest canal is the disused Leven canal, which can be fished on a day ticket. It is teeming with fish, but needs plenty of skill (or time) to fish between the lilies or clear a patch. The ducks love it!

A four by four is recommended to get to the central part of the canal which is down a gravel track.

Sea

Aldbrough, Hornsea, Mappleton
