Wentworth House

Wentworth House was probably the house of Matthew Wentworth, who married the widow of Thomas Michelbourne (d. 1632), and later belonged to James Bean (d. 1767), a returned planter of Jamaica. Bean rebuilt or remodelled the house, which retains a mid 18th-century staircase and plaster work ceiling. He was a notable person and established a charity that provided two shillings a week for bread for the poor of the village, a charity that is now lost.

The house, with a stuccoed façade, was altered and enlarged again in the 19th century and c. 1970, when it was taken over by an Evangelical charity (Summer Crusades) as a conference and retreat centre.* The hotel owes much to the charity which did substantial landscaping and added the Spooner outbuildings, used at the time as a Chapel and now as the Games room. Another makeover undertaken by Mrs & Mrs Northgraves who created the beautifully co-ordinated decor.  This steady improvement has continued with Denise Whitmore and  Roger Partridge installing double glazing and raised the Hotel to a commercial 4 diamond rated establishment.

The present owners Mark & Ann Teale hope to continue this tradition. Planned improvements include:

bullet

an extended Games area to include Table Tennis and a small gym

bullet

Re-commissioning of the fireplaces in styles to reflect the age of the House

bullet

Providing a greater range of conference and business facilities

bullet

Providing greater access to activities in the form of bike and other equipment hire.

The Wentworth House Hotel.

The Hotel has 1 en-suite twin, 4  En-suite double (2 four poster beds, 1 ground floor room),  2 En-suite family rooms and a non- ES twin room, which has a private Whirlpool bathroom. The secure car park can hold 15 cars.

The bar area has a fine selection of wines, spirits and popular beers and is the perfect way to relax after a busy day and a good meal.

There is a separate games room, with a pool table  and table tennis
