Walk 1 takes you to the east of the village along leafy green lanes, across set aside cliff top scrub, along the cliff top and then back along seaside road, where quaint holiday homes line the road.
The walk begins at the top of Wentworth Grove were you turn left on to East Newton Road. This road leads to the Hamlets of East Newton and Ringbrough. Passing Hill farm on the left. The road leads out of the village. Sudden attacks of fatigue may be resolved by the use of the bench, although please use it with caution!
The road opens up to provide glorious views of the fields and the bright rape crop in mid May.
As the road bends just past a passing point. There is a footpath to the left. This leads through a rape field to the cliff top. Where you turn left to walk north towards Seaside Road.
It is sometimes possible to get to the beach anywhere along the cliff top. However, you may not be able to get back up again as you approach Seaside road. Seaside road may only be recognisable by a few posts that may be seen from the beach.
Also caution should be used if the weather has been wet as there are often pools of deep sticky mud that have clamed many Wellingtons & other items of footwear.
If you do go on the beach look out for fossils. The most common are from the
Jurassic period and presumably plucked by glaciers from the limestone
outcrops around the Whitby region. Gryphea (devils toenails) are abundant.
Ammonites
At the end of the ever shortening Seaside road you turn West and pass the Caravan site and a series of quaint Holiday chalets. Some with apt names such as 'Cliff top cottage to be'.
Along the road some great views of the countryside may be seen.
